In The Book
One of the most frequent comments about Trooper newspaper goes something like, “When I get the paper, ‘In the Book’ is what I read first.” This expression comes from both Troopers and civilians alike. Thus, it’s unfortunate that not all parts of this job are represented here. All of us that work on the paper know that there is great work being done out there that never makes it into these pages. “In the Book” is a collection of the month's most interesting situations, arrests, rescue missions, chases and whatever else happens. We encourage contributions from stations all over the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

door bumped Matt and spun him around. The pursuit was on to 95 North and Route 28 in multiple directions. When Tpr Cahill attempted to intercept the Mercedes from the opposite direction, the driver just accelerated toward the cruiser, causing Tpr Cahill to avoid a nasty collision. This caused both Tprs to lose sight of the Mercedes. Officer Stephen Neal of Andover PD found the car soon after and started another pursuit with more evasive maneuvers by the Mercedes driver, attempting to avoid stop sticks. Sgt Eric Bernstein got his sticks under the driver’s side tire but the driver kept trucking along on three tires until he was blocked in by cruisers from the State, Lawrence, and Andover Police. Surprisingly enough, the driver was not on the agreement for the rented Mercedes. He claimed the big reason for taking off was his suspended license. I’m going to use my detective skills and guess that there was probably an illegal substance or two stashed by the bad guys in between pursuits. What would a flagger have done? Probably attempt to buy some of the illicit substance.

ets end my long In the Book hiatus by reminding people why Troopers are better than sex offender registry flagmen. While on his way home on 93 North in Woburn from a PAID DETAIL Tpr Matt Topping (AHQ CAT) noticed a fancy-pants Mercedes going 55 mph in the 4th lane. It then sped up to 80, dropped back to 55, back up to 80, and so on for a while. When Matt decided to stop the Mercedes the driver decided to stop immediately… in the 4th lane. Matt was then able to quickly convince the driver to pull slightly to the left in the high speed breakdown lane. When Matt asked the driver for his license and reg the driver thought about it for a second, then thought better of it and decided to punch it, but not before he cut his wheel to the left (into Matt) when his
Keeping with the Lawrence theme Tpr Jim Connolly (A-1) was on Rte 110 when he noticed that every trash barrel on the street was tipped over with their contents in the road. He then came across a bald fatbody who’s intelligence rivaled that of Tpr Danab Shea’s infamous Starburst pinch. Jim then observed as this guy showed another trash barrel who’s boss, and then another. Having been thoroughly impressed with the strength of the trash tosser Jim talked to the guy, who claimed to be faced, but didn’t stink like booze in the least bit. Sure enough he had a warrant in Lawrence District to go along with charges for knocking over 17 trash barrels. Tpr Pat McCrave (A-3) was swinging his road on 495 North in Boxborough when he happened upon a DMV that seemed strangely familiar to him. Upon running the plate, Pat realized the car was the same one involved in a hit and run he investigated two months prior, where the car was later located by a

pr. Adam LeBlanc (SP Middleboro) was running a little radar out on Route 24 in Raynham when an approaching vehicle caught his attention. It wasn’t the vehicles speed that alerted Adam but the loud scrapping noise and the sparks coming from one of its tires. After catching up to the vehicle and observing numerous marked lanes violations and a speed of 80 MPH (despite driving on a rim) the blue lights came on. The oblivious driver took his time slowing down before finally pulling over and coming to a stop. Adam made contact with the driver and observed all the telltale signs that he was sloshed.
