In reporting on wastewater COVID screening , Heather Buschman , PhD ’ 08 , assistant director of communications for UC San Diego Health Sciences , found herself standing outside labs where she herself once studied infectious diseases . But instead of a petri dish , she was looking at a bottle of toilet water . “ It ’ s one of those moments when you think , ‘ How did my career lead me here ?’ But that ’ s what I love about what I do , and why I ’ m proud to do it here , on the forefront of technology .”

I practically lived in building 2A ( now AP & M ) during my upper division years . Punch card machines , printed and paper tape binary results , and the vending machines in the basement with delightfully “ tasty ” sandwiches .

As a freshman , I lived in Challenger , first floor . One day , my folks came to visit and we picnicked outside while my cousins took naps in my room . My friends came by and thought I had opened a day care !
When Dolores Davies learned about the new Craft Center last year , she was ecstatic . As a longtime staff member at UC San Diego , now retired , Davies joins the many alumni who have warm and fuzzy feelings about the original Craft Center and its Grove Gallery . “ Besides taking art classes , I spent many a lunch hour perusing exhibits and sales at the gallery , and made numerous purchases of objets d ’ art over the years . Some 25 years later , I still admire and treasure these beautiful objects .”
Student writer Savannah Muñoz used to walk by campus “ halls of fame ” every day , but now attends class remotely . “ Working on this story alongside our Triton editors gave me a greater appreciation for the purpose behind our building and street names , and the history we might forget about in the everyday hustle and bustle of campus .”
