LETTER FROM THE CHANCELLOR

DESTINATION : UC SAN DIEGO

At its founding , UC San Diego was conceived as a destination . A respite from harsh weather and a retreat from tradition , our university piqued the curiosities of the nation ’ s most brilliant minds , people who wanted to change the world . Their interaction created a spirit of possibility and a culture of creativity that has inspired Tritons ever since to look deeper , explore uncommon connections and strive to improve the human condition .
Today , we continue that legacy . We cultivate connections across campus , throughout our region and around the world . We welcome diverse perspectives . We nurture inclusive collaboration . And we design programs and spaces to exchange concepts , evolve thought and develop innovations .
For example , last year , we opened the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood to rave reviews and broke ground on the Theatre District Living and Learning Neighborhood . Specifically designed to foster deeper bonds between students , faculty and visitors , these neighborhoods mix housing , restaurants , retail , outdoor recreation , and academic , cultural and community spaces to fundamentally change the way our students and our community experience UC San Diego .
Just steps away from the newly opened UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley extension is our new Design and Innovation Building . Inside , programs such as The Basement , the Maker Space , the Design Lab and the Entrepreneurship Center are bringing students , faculty , alumni and industry together to further develop and disseminate the brilliant ideas that emerge from UC San Diego . Nearby , the new Epstein Family Amphitheater will open this summer to offer audiences more than 300 public performances a year .
Also on the Blue Line and opening this year is UC San Diego Park and Market in downtown San Diego . With public space outside and meeting , arts and educational spaces inside , it is designed to increase access to the wealth of resources UC San Diego has to offer our regional community . Back on campus , Franklin Antonio Hall will also open this year to help facilitate interdisciplinary , cross-campus collaborations critical to solving the toughest challenges facing society .
In the years that follow , a new , iconic Triton Pavilion and Alumni Center will welcome our alumni , prospective students and visitors alike and provide a modern space to expand student health and well-being services . A new Outpatient Pavilion will open at our Hillcrest Medical Center , and over the next decade , the Hillcrest campus will be completely reimagined to increase access to UC San Diego Health ’ s nationally ranked specialties and award-winning patient care .
There is even more to UC San Diego than top-ranked education , cutting-edge research and world-class patient care . Visit the newly reopened Craft Center or see visual and performing arts shows at Mandeville Arts Center or La Jolla Playhouse . Come see the penguins at Birch Aquarium or explore your curiosities at Geisel Library . Catch a Division I Triton Athletics event or experience the world-famous public art of the Stuart Collection . Dine and shop , or just take a walk on our beautiful campus .
There is something for everyone at UC San Diego , especially for Triton alumni . I hope to see you on campus soon .
With kind regards ,
Pradeep K . Khosla Chancellor
