Triton men ’ s basketball got off to a great start by beating the Cal Golden Bears , 80-67 , in their season opener on the road . It was the team ’ s first win against a current member of the Pac-12 Conference and their first game against Cal since 1985 .
Tritons were again victorious back at RIMAC Arena in their home opener against George Washington University . It was the first home game with fans in attendance since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic , and the score of 75-55 was the Tritons ’ largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent .

BRAINS & BRAWN From the lab and lecture hall to the court , pool and pitch , UC San Diego Tritons are all-around stand-outs ( L-R ): A trio of Tritons were inducted into the UC San Diego Athletic Hall of Fame : Molly Wheatley Hook ’ 86 , women ’ s volleyball , Daniel Perdew ’ 10 , men ’ s swimming , and Brian McManus , women ’ s soccer head coach , 1987-2010 .
◀ JoAnn Trejo , PhD ’ 92 , MBA ’ 15 , professor and cell biology expert , and Elizabeth Winzeler , PhD , professor and leader in anti-malarial drug development , were elected to the National Academy of Medicine .
▶ Computer science professors Stefan Savage of UC San Diego and Tadayoshi Kohno , MS ’ 04 , PhD ’ 06 , of the University of Washington , received the 2021 Golden Goose Award for uncovering tech vulnerabilities in modern cars .
