READER FEEDBACK

Really enjoyed the latest Triton — also love the redesign . When I saw the cover , it was hard to believe it ’ s been 20 years since the Preuss School opened !
I was a junior in 1998 when our provost , Cecil Lytle , held the groundbreaking for the Preuss School . At the time , it did seem like a contradiction — this was a university for college students like me , not for elementary school students ! But I do remember the power of the project , how it made major news , and in retrospect , showed how a college prep school on campus for underserved youth would , as he states in the article , “ make a powerful statement these students were welcome at a UC .” Congrats to Mr . Lytle and those on the Faculty Senate who were forward-thinking enough to take on this challenge .
Also enjoyed the article on Changemakers . As the CEO of the business improvement district nonprofit here in Jacksonville , Florida , we are trying to make change — improve our city by helping downtown Jacksonville be a better place to live , work , visit and invest . Ironically , one of our examples is San Diego in the ’ 70s and ’ 80s leading to the early ’ 90s , when the focus and reinvestment came back to downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter .
The latest Triton magazine included with “ class notes ” the opportunity to name our favorite professor , and invited more submissions . I am submitting mine to you here , as I do not have a social media option . All the professors at Revelle College in 1966 , when I entered , were superlative scholars . What I would like to emphasize is that many were also warm humanitarians , reaching out to their students and community during a very difficult time at UCSD . The Vietnam War was profoundly affecting the campus , resulting in conflicts with local authorities , and even the selfimmolation of a student . Professors Saltman , Holland , Kamen , Suess , Engle and Garrells , among others , opened their offices , hearts and wisdom to students , attempting to calm frightened currents and angry waters . The humanity of the UCSD academic staff has left as deep and important an imprint on my life as their superlative scientific lessons . Thank you for letting me share .
