Our alumni don ’ t fit definitions . Take Joel Garcia , DEd ’ 13 , for example , who was the first in his family to graduate from college . Joel wanted to pave the way for his siblings ; he had no idea of the tremendous effect his education would have on our community . Joel ’ s career took him from a health educator for at-risk youth to a teaching assistant at the Monarch School , a K-12 program for homeless youth , to an administrator with the Escondido Union High School District . He is now an assistant superintendent with the Ramona Unified School District .
