He also served as chair of the mathematics department from 1998 to 2002 and dean of physical sciences from 2000 to 2016 . He conducted research in many areas of mathematics , but was best known for his research on the study of patterns , or combinatorics . He is survived by his wife , son and daughter .
Donna Riley , Muir ’ 77 , PhD ’ 04 , died June 8 , 2017 from cancer . She was 61 . She was a professor and department chair at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon , Calif . She was an advocate for deaf and hard of hearing students . She is survived by her immediate family .
Daniel Yankelovich died September 22 , 2017 , from kidney failure . He was 92 . In 2012 , he founded the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research at UC San Diego , providing the center with a multimillion-dollar endowment . The center is focused on developing practical solutions for pressing national problems , including revitalizing upward mobility . He also established the Daniel Yankelovich Chair in Social Thought at UC San Diego .
Dubbed the “ dean of American pollsters ,” Yankelovich developed innovative social surveys and opinion polls that would go on to influence business and government . Yankelovich lectured at UC San Diego , Harvard University and The New School in New York City , and was the author of numerous books and articles . He is survived by his daughter , granddaughter and sister .
