Scripps Oceanography geologist James Day takes part in the Antarctic Search for Meteorites ( ANSMET ) program to collect meteorites from the Antarctic to determine more about how the planets formed and evolved to their present-day states .
And near Antarctica ’ s McMurdo Station , Scripps professor and paleoclimatologist Jeff Severinghaus ( pictured right ) and PhD student Jessica Ng are conducting tests of the Rapid Access Ice Drill , a revolutionary advancement in terrestrial sampling . Where it once took five years to drill a continuous core in the ice sheet , this new tool now only takes 48 hours , yielding many cores that speak volumes about our changing climate .
