LETTER FROM THE CHANCELLOR
THE TRANSFORMATION OF UC SAN DIEGO
At UC San Diego , we are transforming our university so we can transform our world . The changes we are making are strategic , designed to foster a more connected campus and increase our positive impact on our local and global communities .
Our transformation is physical , intellectual and cultural . In addition to constructing new buildings and preparing for the arrival of the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley in 2021 , we are establishing innovative interdisciplinary research centers — like the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society and the Halicioglu Institute for Data Science — which are tackling some of the most pressing and complex societal challenges , including human health and personalized medicine .
We are taking a fresh look at our undergraduate education curriculum to ensure that we are providing our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful , and we are continuing our nontradition of being an experimental and futuristic campus . We are beginning the visioning process for the creation of a new Seventh College , and possible Eighth College , so we can continue to provide our growing student body with a small college experience within the larger university setting .

UC San Diego also recently accepted an invitation to join the Big West Conference , paving the way for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I reclassification . This move will significantly increase UC San Diego ’ s visibility , enhance our sense of community and heighten our school pride and unity .
All of these changes advance our Strategic Plan goals and the three pillars of the Campaign for UC San Diego : enhance the student experience , spark research and innovation , and create a living and learning infrastructure . Through our transformation , we are creating opportunities for our campus members so they can continue to make our world a better place by pushing the frontiers of knowledge and making lifesaving discoveries that enrich the lives of people around the world .
