Roger Tsien died August 24 in Eugene , Ore . He was 64 . He was the co-winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating a rainbow of florescent proteins that could light up the dance of molecules within cells . Today , it ’ s a common tool used by biologists . He was a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego , where he worked for 27 years . the early 1970s , he established the Center for Energy Research at UC San Diego , encouraging researchers to come together to pursue interdisciplinary energy research . He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1977 and won the National Academy of Engineering ’ s Founders Award in 2007 .

Daniel E . Andrews , PhD ’ 60 , died July 15 in San Diego . He served on several of the Navy ’ s Representative Committees , authored many reports and publications , and held 10 patents . He was the recipient of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award , a Group Special Achievement Award and a Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award .
David Antin died October 11 in San Diego . He was 84 . He was known for improvised performances that he called “ talk poems ,” introducing a new form of American poetry in the 1970s . He was a founder of the Department of Visual Arts at UC San Diego and director of the University Art Gallery from 1968 to 1973 . He retired in 1993 but continued to teach as a professor emeritus .
John Black , Revelle ’ 69 , died in 2011 from colon cancer . After earning a degree in biology at UC San Diego , he attended Washington University School of Medicine and was an anesthesiologist in Bowling Green , Ky . He is survived by his wife of 40 years ,
Toby ; his two children , Sandy and Lee ; and a grandson .
Peter J . Dean , PhD ’ 71 , died August 25 . A lifelong scholar , he attended the University of Toronto before earning a Ph . D . from UC San Diego . His life was filled with books , travel and art . He is survived by his wife of 44 years , Penny Lawler ; his two daughters , Alison and Kate ; and a granddaughter .
Shirley Duffy , Muir ’ 82 , died September 10 following a brief illness . She is survived by her children , a grandson , and extended family .
Suresa Dundes , MFA ’ 83 , died August 21 after battling multiple cancers . She was 68 .
Pauline Foster , a longtime UC San Diego supporter and Chancellor ’ s Medal recipient , died July 30 . She was 82 . She made a significant impact at UC San Diego , including a $ 7.5 million gift to establish the Pauline and Stanley Foster Pavilion for Cancer Care at Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health . In addition , she established the Stanley and Pauline Foster Endowed Chair
and the Foster MBA Fellowship Fund at the UC San Diego Rady School of Management . In addition , Foster lent her time and advice on many campus boards , including the UC San Diego Foundation .
Troy D . Howard , MS ’ 88 , died September 5 in San Diego . He worked in the telecommunications industry and was most recently manager of IT Applications at Kyocera International .
Charles Mader II , Muir ’ 83 , died September 3 . He was 53 . He was a computer software professional in Seattle . He is survived by his parents , Charles and Emma Jean Mader .
Dr . John J . McGraw , MA ’ 07 , PhD ’ 16 , died July 20 . He was 41 . A world-class scholar , he was also a dedicated athlete and participated in multiple triathlons . He is survived by his parents and extended family .
Stanford S . “ Sol ” Penner died at his La Jolla home on July 15 . He was 95 . In 1964 , he joined the UC San Diego faculty and became the founding chair of the Engineering Department . In
was 59 . He was president and CEO of the biotechnology company Prothena . He devoted his scientific career to researching neurological diseases such as Alzheimer ’ s and Parkinson ’ s . He is survived by his wife and four children .
Anthony Sebald died July 11 from complications related to Alzheimer ’ s disease . He was 74 . He worked in the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for nearly 30 years , and was associate dean for academic affairs from 1998 to 2002 . He retired in 2004 .
Edward ( Jerry ) Winterer died August 30 in Del Mar , Calif . He was 91 . He was a professor emeritus of geology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego . Chairman of the graduate program from 1968 to 1972 , Winterer was also a member of the Scripps academic staff and was named a distinguished professor in 1994 , before his retirement in 1997 .
