BRINGING IT BACK

When I returned to my native San Diego in 2012 , I immediately set out to get involved with my alma mater . I am a double alumna , graduating from Revelle in 1982 and the School of Medicine in 1986 . It ’ s true that student life then isn ’ t what it is today ; the university leadership believed that being a great academic institution was all we needed to be — and that we were ! But as a result , some alumni from my generation don ’ t feel a strong connection and , consequently , aren ’ t involved today .
Yet for me , returning after more than 25 years made me excited to reenter the academic world as a volunteer and see what was new . The alumni office was encouraging and helped me find ways to get involved . Soon I was on a panel of doctors talking to pre-med biology students , judging presentations for the UC-wide Grad Slam contest , testing the skills of medical students and teaching Problem-Based Learning seminars . Not long after that , I was asked to join the School of Medicine Alumni Board and then the UCSD Alumni Board . I find it incredibly rewarding to have this interaction with such talented students and dedicated alumni , and my experiences with them have shown me how much university life has changed for the better , and how much more demanding it is for today ’ s students . They need the support of alumni now more than ever .
Luckily , the opportunities for alumni to get involved are nearly limitless . Yes , there are numerous scholarship programs and giving opportunities , and these are vital for our students . But there are also many ways for alumni to interact with students — one-on-one , in a panel discussion or through student entrepreneurial programs at The Basement ( see p . 48 )— I KNOW there is something for YOU !
