Construction has begun on an 11-mile addition to the San Diego Trolley system that will extend the Blue Line from Old Town along Interstate 5 to UC San Diego and beyond . The project will encompass nine new trolley stations , including two UC San Diego stops at Pepper Canyon and Voigt Drive . Though trolley service won ’ t begin until 2021 , you may already spot newly unveiled trolley cars inspired by UC San Diego research as they make their way across our great city .
