Azfar Alam , an undergraduate computer science student at UC San Diego , died June 11 after drowning off the coast of La Jolla Cove . He was 22 years old .
John S . Black , Revelle ’ 69 , died in December 2011 following a long illness . He was a respected anesthesiologist for over 30 years in Bowling Green , KY . He is survived by his wife , two children and two grandchildren .
Douglas M . Cameron , Ph . D . ’ 86 , died August 8 following a long battle with cancer . He was a tenured professor at Ursinus College , where he taught for 28 years .
Jose M . Cortes , Sixth ’ 08 , died June 18 . He was 31 years old .
Bard-Alan Finlan , Revelle ’ 92 , died unexpectedly on June 6 . Finlan earned his doctorate in music from the University of Southern California and was an accomplished composer and singer .
Rolland G . Hammerness , M . A . ’ 67 , died June 21 . He was 86 . He had a long career as a pharmacist , but took a brief hiatus to serve as a Lutheran pastor .
Karen K . Kakishiba , M . D . ’ 84 , died peacefully at her home on June 6 . She is survived by her two daughters , Kristen and Kylie ; parents , Kazuo and Yoshiko Wada ; and brother , Kenny Wada .
William E . Lucas died on June 6 at the age of 88 . He taught and practiced at the UC San Diego School of Medicine , retiring in 1988 as vicechairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology . He was also the head of the divisions of gynecology surgery and oncology . He is survived by his wife of 66 years , Mary Lou , and their children .
Jill Moon , Muir ’ 81 , M . F . A . ’ 84 , died July 7 . She was a theater set designer , curator , painter , photographer and professor of visual arts at Cornell University .
Sharon D . Perry , Ph . D . ’ 99 , died following complications from surgery on July 10 in Palo Alto , Calif . Perry spent her life as an accomplished epidemiologist who worked extensively in underserved communities around the world .
Joel W . Reynolds , M . F . A . ’ 85 , died June 6 . He formed his own off-Broadway theater in New York City with his wife and also designed for the television shows All My Children and Person of Interest .
Fred R . Smith died July 17 . He was a practicing gastroenterologist in south Florida for over 20 years . Smith is survived by his wife and three children .
Diane Cary-Smith , Revelle ’ 87 , died September 4 following a long battle with lung cancer . She was 66 . She is survived by her brothers , nephews and nieces .
Gina Sosinsky died on September 4 from complications related to a bone marrow transplant . She joined the UC San Diego faculty in 1995 and was the assistant director of the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research . Sosinsky produced groundbreaking
work in the molecular structure of gap junctions and other cell-cell junctions .
Kent Stacy , a UC San Diego student , died August 31 following a motorcycle accident near his home in Clio , Calif . He studied physics and psychology at UC San Diego for three years before beginning a career in computer software engineering and warehouse automation . Stacy is survived by his wife , Anne Williams , and his father , Reginald Stacy .
Analy Torres , Marshall ’ 95 , died August 26 . She was 42 . Torres had a lengthy career as a high school counselor in San Diego , Imperial Valley and most recently in the Calexico Unified School District , the same school district she attended in her youth .
Charles M . Verhaegh , Muir ’ 81 , died peacefully in his home on August 2 from cancer and heart failure . He battled leukemia during his college years . Verhaegh worked as an engineer for several small companies before retiring in 1998 to raise his children , Jake and Ruth .
Arthur Wagner , founding chair of UC San Diego ’ s Department of Theatre and Dance , died September 21 . He was 92 years old . Wagner was the key to establishing a strong partnership between the university and the La Jolla Playhouse and is remembered for his generosity , especially in creating scholarships for students , including the Student Productions Fund Endowment . He is survived by his wife , Molli ( pictured left ); their son , Wayne ; daughter-in-law , Mary Kies Wagner ; and granddaughter , Kendra Wagner .
