HOW DID A UC SAN DIEGO COACH MAKE AN IMPACT ON YOU ?
( SEE P . 43 )
My favorite PE instructor was former UCSD basketball coach Barry Cunningham — he brought an inspirational energy and mindset to his classes . I took basketball every year !

Tony and Darcy in track were outstanding . Their expectations and encouragement set the stage for our D1 status , even as a D3 program . They made us all better athletes .

During my senior year , Coach Eric taught me to break past my fears and play with peace and control . Overcoming invisible fears and being under control has helped me well beyond the tennis court , in all aspects of life .

Triton managing editor Malinda Danziger ’ 00 wrote about Netflix ’ s Crip Camp , the alumni-produced documentary about a 1960s summer camp for youth with disabilities : “ There ’ s great power in a camp experience . Not all camps change the world , but they all change their campers . The community , personal development and just plain fun that made Camp Jened so impactful are at play in UCSD ' s own summer camp , Knock Around . My kids have attended it for years , and it always says ‘ summer ’ to me .”
Triton editor Jarrett Haley dove deep into exploring early campus development plans for our cover story . “ It was fascinating to learn what could have been on campus — A canyon dammed into a lake ? A giant , central communications tower ? It was honestly like exploring alternative realities . Amazing , too , how some early ideas are now being realized , even after all this time .”

Doug Danevik was not only a UCSD Hall of Fame Women ’ s Volleyball coach , he was a great “ volleyball professor ” ( I took at least four classes ). I still remember “ make a window ” with your arms for the dig .
UC San Diego Athletics staff Maddy Lewis ’ 19 , Kendrick Mooney and Jeff Tourial shared the stories of our three longest-serving coaches . “ They ’ ve touched the lives of so many scholarathletes over the years , and they know that athletics is not only about wins and losses , but improving the lives of their players . They saw us through the transition from Division III to Division II , and now we look forward to their impact at the Division I level .”
