Triton ’ s managing editor Malinda Danziger ’ 00 felt a kinship with author Luis Alberto Urrea ’ 77 . “ I was also a first-generation college student from a Hispanic family . My first quarter at UCSD , I was a bundle of nerves . Without the support of family and friends along the way , I might have failed , but instead I found a purpose . I ’ m proud to write for alumni and share what UC San Diego means to others . For me , the education I received changed my entire life , and inspired many family members to pursue higher education .”
Author and journalist Jenee Darden ’ 02 attended UC San Diego the same time as Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza ’ 02 . “ Interviewing Garza about how life at UCSD inspired her social justice work rekindled memories in me . I was a college student witnessing history and I didn ' t even know it .”
Triton editor Jarrett Haley took a deep dive into the history of the Che Café — “ It was a lack of understanding that brought the Che Café to the brink . But its history , purpose and impact on generations of Tritons is incredibly expansive , so much more than what could fit in these pages .” Make sure to read along with the annotated story at tritonmag . com / che
