Walter Munk , PhD ’ 47 , an icon of oceanography who had been UC San Diego ’ s oldest alumnus , died Feb . 8 at his home in La Jolla , Calif . He was 101 . As a geophysicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography , Munk made groundbreaking observations of waves , ocean temperature , and tidal energy , among other contributions to science . Born in Vienna , Austria in 1917 , Munk was a pioneer in predicting wave dynamics , developing techniques that were used for D-Day beach landings during World War II , and are still used in present-day surf forecasts . Later on , his ocean acoustic experiments ultimately demonstrated how the rate at which sound moves through the ocean can be used to measure its temperature . Munk was also a beloved professor and academic figure , and chaired the university ’ s faculty senate during the height of Vietnam-era student unrest . He survived by two daughters , three grandsons , and current spouse Mary Coakley Munk of La Jolla .
Dr . Gustaf Arrhenius died February 3 , 2019 . He was 96 . His varied research as an oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography considered the earliest life on Earth and the origins of the solar system . He played a key role in the formation of UC San Diego , having been tasked by Roger Revelle to recruit humanities and science professors to the new university .
Karen Calfas , PhD ’ 90 , died March 7 . 2019 . She was 57 . She was the executive director of student health and well-being at UC San Diego .
Jennifer A . “ Jendy ” Dennis , Revelle ’ 02 , died February 1 , 2019 , after a long battle with cancer . She was 43 . She worked as a software engineer for various San Diego companies before joining UC San Diego ’ s Information Technology Services , where she designed web and data systems . She is survived by her parents , brothers , and extended family .
Thomas Jones Enright , professor emeritus of mathematics , died on January 27 , 2019 , after several years battling Parkinson ’ s disease . He was 71 . He is survived by his wife , son , and extended family .
Margaret Garb , MA ’ 94 , a professor of history at Washington University in St . Louis , Mo ., died December 15 , 2018 , from cancer . She was 56 . In 2014 , she cofounded the Washington University Prison Education Project . She is survived by her husband , daughter , and extended family .
Audrey Geisel , a devoted philanthropist , business leader , and wife of the late Theodor “ Dr . Seuss ” Geisel , died December 19 , 2018 . She was 97 . Geisel was president of Dr . Seuss Enterprises and the Dr . Seuss Foundation , and had a longstanding relationship with UC San Diego . She donated more than 12,000 of her husband ’ s drawings , manuscripts , and other memorabilia to the library , which was renamed to honor the Geisels in 1995 , in recognition of a $ 20 million gift from Audrey . The Chancellor ’ s residence is likewise named the “ Audrey Geisel University House ” in recognition of her supporting its renovation , and the newly opened café inside Geisel Library was named Audrey ’ s to honor the indelible impact of her generosity to campus . Audrey Geisel is survived by her two daughters .
Gary Scott Hahn , MD ’ 78 , died February 6 , 2019 , following complications from a heart attack and stroke . He founded Immunetech Pharmaceuticals based on a technology he developed as a PhD student at UC San Diego . He was a lifelong entrepreneur who contributed to various therapies and overthe-counter medications .
Aline G . Hornaday , MA ’ 79 , PhD ’ 84 , died December 19 , 2018 . She was 95 . A lifelong San Diegan , she was publisher and owner of The Daily Transcript newspaper from 1960 to 1972 .
Michael Jones , Revelle ’ 71 , died on November 25 , 2018 , from a heart attack . According to friend Gerald Lance Johannsen ’ 71 , Jones had coordinated an annual informal on-campus reunion for Argo Suite 410 over the past 50 years . He is survived by his wife , Alice McCreery , Muir ’ 73 .
Dr . Lewis Judd , PhD , a longtime psychiatry chair at the UC San Diego School of Medicine , died on December 16 , 2018 . He was 88 . He is survived by his wife , Dr . Patricia Judd , his daughters , and extended family .
Jack Frederick Mangelsdorf Jr ., Revelle ’ 73 , MA ’ 78 , died February 24 , 2019 , of advanced kidney cancer . He was 68 . Known as “ the father of lacrosse ” in San Diego County , Mangelsdorf played and coached at elite levels . He founded UC San Diego ’ s lacrosse club in 1974 and operated a lacrosse-based business for 30 years . He recently was honored by the San Diego Seals professional lacrosse team . He is survived by his mother , son , and three brothers .
Lt . Col . Robert T . Sweginnis , Roosevelt ’ 93 , died January 5 , 2019 , after a battle with brain cancer . He served as a pilot in the U . S . Marine Corps and was selected as a presidential command pilot under then-president Barack Obama . He is survived by his wife , children , and extended family .
