October 28 , 2017 . He was 88 . Getoor began working in the UC San Diego mathematics department in 1966 . He is survived by his wife , daughter and extended family .
Francis A . Sprout , MFA ’ 72 , died November 2 , 2017 . He was 77 . Sprout was a professor and studio artist whose work is included in collections across the country . He is sur-
Susan Taylor , MA ’ 77 , died December 15 , 2017 . She was 67 . Taylor studied Latin American history at UC San Diego before serving as chief of staff to California politician and lifelong friend Lucy Killea . She worked as director of governmental and community relations at UC San Diego for many years and was a major supporter of the campus , serving on the UCSD Alumni Board of Directors and the Board of Overseers . After retiring , Taylor completed the master gardener program at UC San Diego and helped schools and communities set up gardens . She was active in local politics , serving on numerous community boards and volunteering her time to local causes . She is survived by her children , brother and extended family .
He was 67 . Barnwell was a musician known for his accomplishments as a pianist , musical arranger , band leader and videographer . He is survived by his wife , children , grandchildren and extended family .
William G . Best , Revelle ’ 94 , died January 23 , 2018 . He was 46 .
Lorraine M . Cherry , Revelle ’ 69 , died November 25 , 2017 . She was 70 . After working in various faculty positions at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center , she started her own biomedical research and consulting service . She was known for her efforts to preserve what is now called West 11th Street Park in Houston . She is survived by her husband and brother .
George Feher , founding faculty member , died November 28 , 2017 . He was 93 . Feher founded the biophysics program at UC San Diego , establishing a laboratory dedicated to uncovering the primary processes of photosynthesis . He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1975 . He is survived by his wife , two daughters and three grandchildren .
Steven Haubert , Marshall ’ 80 , died February 15 , 2018 . He was 65 .
Jeffrey D . Hoover , Revelle ’ 88 , died January 30 , 2018 . He was 52 .
Virginia L . Knight , Revelle ’ 88 , died November 21 , 2017 . She was 50 . Knight was a highly decorated combat veteran of the U . S . Navy . After being honorably discharged from the military , she worked as an emergency medicine physician at hospitals and urgent care clinics in the San Diego area . She is survived by her husband and extended family .
F . Richard Moore , professor emeritus of music , died September 29 , 2017 . He was 73 . Moore served as director of the Center for Music Experiment at UC San Diego for nine years . He is considered a pioneer in the development of computer music .
John Harvey Serocki , Revelle ’ 77 , died February 21 , 2018 . He was 61 . Serocki was an orthopedic surgeon and a member of Doctors Without Borders . Throughout his career , he dedicated his time and expertise to help underprivileged children and animals , as well as relief in natural disasters . He is survived by his wife , children and grandchildren .

Joyce Cutler-Shaw , MFA ’ 72 , died March 18 , 2018 . She was 85 . A member of the first graduating class of UC San Diego ’ s MFA program in visual arts , Cutler-Shaw was an artist of many disciplines and the first artist-in-residence at the UC San Diego School of Medicine . She taught medical students the power of empathy and understanding through her class , “ Representing the Human Body : Drawing as a Way of Seeing .” She was also a benefactor of the UC San Diego Library , in which her work “ Alphabet of Bones ” is displayed , an original calligraphy inspired by the hollow bones of birds . She is survived by her husband , Jerome , children and
extended family .
