Don Norman is director of the Design Lab at UC San Diego , and has been chair of the department of psychology and co-founder and chair of cognitive science . Upon retirement from the university in 1993 , he joined Apple as VP of advanced technology , then became a professor of computer science at Northwestern , where he co-founded and co-directed the Segal Design Institute . In 2014 he returned to UC San Diego to start the Design Lab . He is the author of 18 books , the best known being The Design of Everyday Things .
