It is called commencement because although college has ended , a new chapter of life begins : a life as UC San Diego alumni . This year ’ s latest class of Tritons will hear an inspirational address from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama , Tenzin Gyatso , speaking at this June ’ s All- Campus Commencement . At a separate event for the public on Friday , June 16 , 2017 , UC San Diego invites alumni and community members to hear His Holiness ’ message of compassion and inclusion .
