Considered UC San Diego ’ s founding father , Roger Revelle ( left ) envisioned a graduate school to teach the basic sciences to students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography , which he directed from 1951 to 1964 .
Upon approval from the UC Regents , Revelle scoured the country for groundbreaking faculty of the time , establishing a legacy of excellence passed on to students like those seen right in this chemistry lab from Third ( now Marshall ) College circa 1971 .
