Tom Tucker died January 19 . He was 71 years old . Tucker was the assistant vice chancellor of student programs and facilities from 1983-2003 and was instrumental in the construction of both Price Center and RIMAC Arena . Tucker was deeply respected and admired among the students he worked with ; in 2011 , several Triton alumni established the Tom Tucker Scholarship to honor their mentor .
Dilip K . Bhadra , Ph . D . ’ 65 , died September 22 from end-stage Parkinson ’ s disease . He was a theoretical physicist at General Atomics after earning his doctorate in physics as a charter graduate student . Bhadra is survived by his wife , Marsha .
Tomi L . Bortolazzo , Marshall ’ 84 , died October 13 from natural causes . Bortolazzo graduated with a degree in biochemistry and cell biology before going on to practice medicine and surgery for 21 years .
John P . Clay , Ph . D . ’ 73 , died November 8 in Murray , Utah . He was 80 years old . Clay received his doctorate in engineering science before going on to work as an accomplished engineer .
Donald Peters-Coville died January 5 . A part of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering since 2003 , he served as the department ’ s management service officer . He is survived by his wife , Michele .
Charles Cox , M . A . ‘ 50 , Ph . D . ’ 55 , died of cancer November 30 in his home in Del Mar , Calif . He was 93 years old . Known to his friends and colleagues as “ Chip ,” Cox was a pioneering researcher and a professor emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography .
Gerald W . Drake , Revelle ’ 71 , died September 4 from a heart attack at his home in Riverside , Calif . He graduated with a degree in chemistry before beginning a 40-year career as a respected environmental water treatment chemist .
Edmund J . Fantino died September 22 in his home in Del Mar , Calif . after 27 years of battling metastatic prostate cancer . Fantino was a distinguished professor emeritus of psychology at UC San Diego with 48 years of completed service at the time of his death . Edmund is survived by his wife , Stephanie Stolarz-Fantino , his two daughters , Ramona and Marin , and two grandchildren .
Douglas L . Inman , M . S . ’ 48 , Ph . D . ’ 53 , died February 11 in La Jolla . He was 95 . Inman was a coastal science pioneer , conducting groundbreaking research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography on the science of the processes that shape our shoreline .
Leonard Lieberman died January 8 in his home at the age of 100 . A professor emeritus of physics at UC San Diego , Lieberman joined the faculty after the end of World War II and conducted pioneering research in underwater sound .
Kyle I . MacDonald , Marshall ’ 11 , died December 12 in Corona del Mar , Calif . He played for the men ’ s water polo team at UC San Diego .
Michael V . Ruby , Warren ’ 84 , died December 6 . Ruby received his B . A . in chemistry from UC San Diego . He is survived by his mother , wife , son and three siblings .
Kurt F . Schmitt , Ph . D . ’ 78 , died on November 9 after battling cancer . Schmitt received his doctorate from Scripps Institution of Oceanography . He is survived by his mother , two brothers and sister .
Marion B . Sewer died January 28 from a pulmonary embolism . She was 43 . Sewer joined UC San Diego ’ s Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2009 , where she taught and conducted research . She was associate director of the Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award program at UC San Diego , which aids underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows .
Aimee E . Tabor , Roosevelt ’ 00 , died on December 8 of cardiac arrest . After receiving her B . A . from UC San Diego , Tabor went on to earn her doctorate in education before becoming the education director of the TRUST Center at UC Berkeley .
Ryan J . Taylor , M . S . ’ 02 , Ph . D . ’ 05 , died November 16 from brain cancer . Taylor received both his M . S . and Ph . D . in mechanical and aerospace engineering from UC San Diego . While working for both IBM and Quantum Corporation , he was also an avid music lover , producer and musician .
Don Wilkie died October 5 . He was 84 years old . Wilkie was the director of the Scripps Aquarium Museum from 1965 to 1993 and the founding director of Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography .
David Woodruff died December 16 at his home in Chapel Hill , N . C ., from complications associated with multiple myeloma . He was a worldrenowned conservation geneticist , biogeographer and emeritus professor of biology . Woodruff was the founding chair of the Ecology , Behavior and Evolution section of UC San Diego ’ s Division of Biological Sciences .
Manlin Yang and Shun Yang died December 22 following a car collision in San Diego . The unrelated students were both from Guangzhou , China . Manlin Yang , 24 years old , was a Sixth College student studying computer science . Shun Yang , 23 years old , was a Marshall College student studying economics .
