Triton managing editor Malinda Danziger ’ 00 had the opportunity to work with artist Evelyn Walker , MFA ’ 18 , for our art feature — and this portrait ! “ I have a great appreciation for art ,” says Danziger , “ the inspiration , the various media , and the thought-provoking dialogue it generates among viewers . It was fun to be take part in Evelyn ’ s process and see the finished product .”
The book Laboratory Yellowstone by Bob Lindstrom ’ 73 was a revelation for Triton editor Jarrett Haley : “ I always thought all things DNA were done exclusively in labs , start to finish . But the role of Yellowstone microbes in optimizing PCR was mind-blowing , as is the potential of other microscopic natural resources . What a truly wondrous world .”
With a firefighter brother and parents who live in a fire-prone area outside L . A ., Lauren Fimbres Wood ’ 01 , director of strategic communications for Scripps Institution of Oceanography , knows how terrifying California wildfires can be . “ UC San Diego is really dedicating its intellect and resources to help fight and prevent these disasters . It ’ s powerful to see how wide our technology is being used on the front lines .”
CORRECTION : Our spring issue ’ s bio for Alumni Award honoree Emily Koch , MAS ’ 19 , was inaccurate . It should have read : A humanitarian and social ecologist , Emily “ Emi ” Koch founded the nonprofit Beyond the Surface , providing positive youth development tools , training and safe-spaces for children from small-scale fishing villages to cultivate attuned , caring relationships with themselves , society and their marine environment . Her global approach is grassroots , personally engaging youth and their families to celebrate their strengths while addressing challenges impacting their social – ecological wellbeing and sustainable futures .
