When schools and businesses closed in March , Triton magazine stopped production on the spring issue and instead collected first-person accounts of life during the pandemic . “ It was oddly comforting to talk to other alumni experiencing this unique moment ,” says Triton ’ s managing editor , Malinda Danziger ’ 00 . “ These stories in this fall issue are just a fraction of those online at tritonmag . com / dispatches .”
Writer Dolores Davies , a longtime lover and collector of books , was destined to write about libraries , including Geisel Library ( see p . 42 ). Some 30 years ago , she and her husband were lucky enough to buy the Del Mar house of Mel Voigt , UC San Diego ’ s first university librarian . Around that time she began working at UC San Diego and was hired as the Library ’ s first communications director in 2008 , working in Geisel until her retirement in 2017 . “ It was the best place to work on campus — and not just because of the books ,” she says .
While recovering from major back surgery , writer / photographer Rob Gilley ’ 84 picked up a copy of Triton magazine . “ I was reminded of my time at UCSD and the years spent surfing and shooting Black ’ s Beach . Researching this story , reliving old times , and reconnecting with old friends not only brought me out of my post-surgery funk , but is helping me get through a pandemic .”
A Grand Win
For Triton
Triton received top honors of a Grand Gold award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education , District VII , for the “ Echoes of 1969 ” issue of Fall 2019 . It is the first CASE Grand Gold ever awarded to UC San Diego .
