Karen Garsson , Muir ’ 88 , died May 12 , 2018 , at 53 . Garsson served as treasurer for the UC San Diego Alumni Association and was a board member for nine years . She also volunteered as a board member for the San Diego Natural History Museum , Athena San Diego , Project Wildlife , the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego Science Alliance . Previously , she was vice president of corporate responsibility for international IT company SAIC , designing corporate citizenship strategies for employee engagement . There she designed and established a national program that connected the company ’ s scientists and engineers to students at community schools .

Tristan Beaudette , Revelle ’ 05 died June 22 , 2018 . He was 35 . Beaudette was associate director for Allergan , an international pharmaceutical company . He is survived by his wife , children and extended family .

Kajun Cheng , Marshall ’ 04 , died May 25 , 2018 . He was 39 .

Jeffrey Elman died June 28 , 2018 . He was 70 . Elman was a distinguished professor , founding member of the Department of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego and , most recently , the founding co-director of the university ’ s new Halicioğlu Data Science Institute . He was a mentor and internationally recognized scholar . He is survived by his spouse , children and grandchildren .

Peter Farrell died May 13 , 2018 . He was 93 . Farrell was a celebrated cellist and a longtime faculty member of UC San Diego ’ s Department of Music . He is survived by his sons and grandchildren .

Helen Mayer Harrison , professor emeritus , died March 25 , 2018 . She was 90 . Harrison taught in UC San Diego ’ s visual arts department and directed the university ’ s extension program . She is survived by her husband , children , grandchildren and extended family .

Marcel Hénaff died June 11 , 2018 . He was 75 . Hénaff was a professor in UC San Diego ’ s Department of Literature from 1989 until retiring in 2012 . He was known for bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to his courses and was a mentor to many students and colleagues .

Patrick Ikeda , Revelle ’ 83 , died May 5 , 2018 . He was 57 . Ikeda was an appraiser for the San Joaquin County Assessor ’ s Office for 33 years . He was an officer and activist with the Service Employees ’ International Union ( SEIU ),

as well as an accomplished ski and judo instructor . He is survived by his parents , wife , brother and extended family .

Bruce Lehmann died June 2 , 2018 . He was 62 . Lehmann was an accomplished professor of finance economics for the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy . He is survived by his mother , wife , children and extended family .

Dan Lindsley , professor emeritus of biology , died June 22 , 2018 . He was 92 . Lindsley was a member of UC San Diego ’ s Department of Biology from 1967 until retiring in 1991 . He was known for groundbreaking research on fruit flies . He is survived by his children , grandchildren and great-grandchildren .

Deanna Martin , PhD ’ 13 , died March 12 , 2018 . She was 35 .

Catherine McAdams , Muir ’ 97 , died June 2 , 2018 . She was 46 .

Hugh McLellan , PhD ’ 56 , died May 10 , 2018 . He was 97 . McLellan was an accomplished physical oceanographer and was the first head of the oceanography section of the Division of Environmental Sciences for the National Science Foundation ( NSF ).

Robert Myers , PhD ’ 75 , died April 19 , 2018 . He was 72 . Myers was professor emeritus of anesthesiology and pathology at UC San Diego . He was a pioneer in the field of immune pathogenesis of chronic pain . He is survived by his family .

Hans Paar , professor emeritus of physics , died June 17 , 2018 . He was 74 . Paar was an

internationally distinguished physicist , conducting groundbreaking research on particle physics and astrophysics . He is survived by his wife , daughter , brothers and extended family .

Andres Perkins , Revelle ’ 17 , died February 24 , 2018 . He was 21 .

Brandi Rhoads , Roosevelt ’ 06 , died May 3 , 2018 , from breast cancer . She was 33 . Rhoads was named Ms . Vacaville in Solano County , Calif ., and used her title to advocate for a cure for breast cancer . She is survived by her parents , siblings , grandmother and extended family .

Stephanie Muldrow , Marshall ’ 85 , died July 13 , 2018 . She was 56 . Muldrow was an academic counselor at UC San Diego ’ s Marshall College who also served as a leader and ambassador for UJIMA , Black Staff Association , Summer Bridge , OASIS , and the African American Studies Minor , among many other programs . Even after retirement , she served as interim dean of student affairs at UC San Diego in 2016 .
