LETTER FROM THE CHANCELLOR

BREAKING NEW GROUND

When we collectively created our first-ever Strategic Plan five years ago , we asked ourselves how we could define the future of UC San Diego and what it means to be a public research university . We knew that our student enrollment would continue to grow . We knew that the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley would arrive at our campus ’ s doorstep in 2021 . And we knew it was time to update our Long Range Development Plan . Taking these converging factors and the input of thousands into consideration , it was clear that UC San Diego was ready for a major transformation , focused on being a live , learn and play campus that puts students first and provides opportunities for all .
“ We are building on our strong foundation of excellence to ensure a bright future for UC San Diego .”
A fundamental component of our intellectual , physical and cultural transformation is the recent groundbreaking for the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood — the new home of UC San Diego ’ s Sixth College — which you can read about in this issue . This new vibrant community will provide much-needed student housing and classrooms , new academic buildings to support the arts and humanities and social sciences , a revitalized Craft Center , retail stores and restaurants . With its mixed-use facilities , this neighborhood is more than just brick and mortar ; it is designed to promote interaction and engagement and enliven our campus .
This project fulfills many of our strategic goals , especially enhancing the student experience . We are creating a university that is primarily residential , more connected and a destination for our community . We are sparking synergies , inspiring minds and uniting people . We are building on our strong foundation of excellence to ensure a bright future for UC San Diego .
With kind regards ,
