Lennon Goins , Muir ’ 73 , died July 16 , 2017 from Alzheimer ’ s disease . He was 65 . He ran his own dental practice in La Jolla for 27 years before retiring in 2004 and moving to Georgia . In 1983 , he established the African-American Alumni Scholarship Fund . He served on the board of trustees of the UC San Diego Foundation and managed the university ’ s student dental clinic . In 1997 , he was honored with the distinguished service award from UC San Diego Alumni . He is survived by two brothers , five sisters and extended family .

Dr . Jonathan L . Wright , Warren ’ 85 , died May 1 , 2017 . He was 56 . Wright served in the Colombia Cali Mission . He practiced law for 24 years . He is survived by his wife and three daughters .

Alexander W . Yuen , Roosevelt ’ 97 , died April 1 , 2017 . He was 43 .

Dr . Mary I . Zavanelli , Muir ’ 77 , died February 18 , 2017 , after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ). She was 61 . Zavanelli worked as a researcher and taught in the biology department of UC Santa Cruz for 21 years . She is survived by her husband , father and siblings .
