Esteemed alumnus Walter Munk , PhD ’ 47 , stands for a portrait upon being awarded the 2010 Crafoord Prize in Geosciences by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Munk was honored for his contributions to further our understanding of ocean circulation , tides , waves and their role in the Earth ’ s dynamics .
