FROM HIS DAYS COMMUTING to Warren College to now creating the future of campus , Robert Clossin ’ 95 takes great pride in shaping the future of his alma mater . With a UC San Diego career spanning 20 years , the director of campus planning puts the long-range in longrange development . “ We ' ve been planning for the Light Rail since my first day . There ’ ve been so many iterations — Where does it go ? Do we need tunnels ? After all that , it ' s amazing to see it actually happening .”
Clossin ' s fellow Warren graduate is also leading the expansion of our campus — Jamie Bohannan ’ 08 is the project architect at Carrier Johnson + Culture currently working on the university ’ s downtown outpost . UC San Diego runs deep for Bohannan , who produced a graduate thesis on a potential on-campus downtown environment . “ I called it Downtown Triton ,” she says , “ but bringing the university into downtown San Diego is the ultimate project for me as an alumna .”
Both cite the broad ideological opportunities as the best part of working with , and for , UC San Diego . Bohannan recalls her undergraduate thesis advisor , Keith Pezzoli , as a major influence in her thinking , and Clossin has collaborated with the notable director of the Urban Studies and Planning program as well . “ Our growth becomes a living laboratory , where the research informs what we do ,” says Clossin . “ We applied Keith ’ s green infrastructure modeling strategy to one of our new neighborhoods . Our campus is the place where these theories become reality .”
That essence is Clossin ’ s guiding principle in charting the course for campus . “ I ’ ll often hear , ‘ You ' re not going to recognize the campus .’ But as an alum , my goal is to enhance the campus , and make our features even more recognizable as UC San Diego — a cutting -edge institution with the access , facilities and services it deserves .”
