BUILDING OUR FUTURE
UC San Diego is defining the future of the public research university by activating the institution ’ s first-ever Strategic Plan and launching the Campaign for UC San Diego — an ambitious and bold $ 2 billion endeavor — aimed at transforming the university , physically and intellectually . This evolution is necessary to meet the growing demands of our increasing student population and our enhanced connection to the community with the arrival of the Light Rail Transit to campus in 2021 .
Work has already begun on the building of the new Gilman Bridge , which will connect east and west campus and significantly improve the ease of movement on campus . We ’ re making great progress on our Mesa Graduate and Professional Student Housing project , which advances our goal to provide guaranteed affordable housing for our students , as well as amenities that enhance the student experience . New research buildings will help with impacted majors and improve time-to-degree . The UC San Diego Health System Outpatient Pavilion , on track to open early next year , will streamline services in a more patient-friendly manner .

In addition , several new projects are on the horizon , from new parking structures , to the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood — the new home for Sixth College — and a new engineering building that will house agile multidisciplinary centers . An expansion of the existing Structural and Materials Engineering building will create a home for an Innovation and Design Center that will be a physical and visible hub of creativity , collaboration and entrepreneurship . It will be one of the first buildings people see when stepping off the Blue Line trolley .
There is much change ahead for our campus , and it only serves to strengthen our worldrenowned institution . UC San Diego is seizing the opportunity to reimagine our campus for the 21st century . Together , we are leading a new era of revolutionary ideas , life-saving discoveries and planet-changing impact .
