As a collegiate cross-country runner in the late 1990s , Heather Buschman , Ph . D . ’ 08 , hung a photo of Bobbi Gibb , ’ 69 , on her bedroom wall for inspiration ( p . 22 ). “ I was so excited to learn that she was an alumna ,” she says . “ It was an honor to interview my long-time running idol , and I hope she continues to inspire young women for years to come .”
Freelance writer AnnaMaria Stephens , ’ 97 , was among the first people to ever lay eyes on the R / V Sally Ride ( p . 28 ). “ Everything was covered in plastic when I toured the ship ,” she says , “ but by the time this is in print , the Sally Ride will be a bustling seagoing laboratory answering the most pressing questions of our day .”

Jade Griffin , ’ 03 , first learned about Alternative Breaks ( p . 36 ) in 2010 when she interviewed Andy Nahas , ’ 81 , about his support of the student-run program . That article in Triton magazine then inspired Michael Estrada , ’ 79 , to get involved as well . “ It ’ s amazing to see Triton stories go full circle and inspire others to support future generations of students .”
For UC San Diego photographer Erik Jepsen , ’ 10 , the " Know Thyself " photoshoot on p . 40 was a special moment . “ Witnessing the overwhelming courage among the three people on that couch filled my heart with hope .
