Conrad Prebys , UC San Diego friend and supporter , died July 24 . He was 82 . For more than four decades , Prebys had a successful career as a real estate developer and property manager in San Diego , with a focus on affordable housing . At UC San Diego , he made a significant impact on campus areas including Department of Music , where he established the world-class Conrad Prebys Music Center , the Conrad Prebys Music Endowment and the Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music . He is survived by his life partner , Debbie Turner .
Michael B . Aguirre , Revelle ’ 83 , died January 1 in Fallbrook , Calif . He worked as a medical transcriptionist but was also an avid artist in various media .
William A . Barrila , Marshall ’ 77 , died March 5 . He served in the U . S . Army in Panama before moving to San Diego . He is survived by his wife of 41 years , Amelia ; daughters Christina and Nicola ; and brother , Nunzio .
Timothy D . Bigby died April 4 . He joined UC San Diego and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System ( VASDHS ) in 1989 . He retired in March 2016 after serving as chief of the pulmonary and critical care section at VASDHS and professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Pulmonary , Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at UC San Diego .
Amy E . Blair , Revelle ’ 87 , died May 10 . She received her bachelor ’ s degree in animal behavior and ecology . She is survived by her husband , daughter , mother and sisters .
Olga ( Bonnie ) S . Burn , Muir ’ 74 , died January 20 from nonsmokers lung cancer . She was a passionate community activist .
Ted Case died December 31 from a heart attack . He was an emeritus professor and former chair of the UC San Diego Department of Biology . His research career focused on conservation biology and community ecology .
Chung-Ching Cheng , M . S . ’ 83 , died March 28 . She was 64 . Cheng received her master ’ s degree in chemical engineering .
Harold Cohen died April 27 . A former chair of the visual arts department and emeritus professor , he is regarded as a pioneer of computergenerated art for developing AARON , one of the first computer software programs for creating works of art .
Linda A . Doty , Muir ’ 84 , died June 4 . She worked for newspapers in Ventura County , Calif ., and Colorado Springs , Colo ., for 17 years .
Richard Goben , Marshall ’ 79 , died January 25 following complications from pneumonia . For nearly two decades , Goben was the captain of the Star of India , the world ’ s oldest sailing ship .
Teresa Gonzalez-Lee , Ph . D . ’ 75 , died July 17 . She was 72 . She taught Spanish at MiraCosta College in San Diego for nearly 25 years and was a gifted bilingual poet .
Shawna D . Halvorson , Muir ’ 11 , died February 28 . She received her bachelor ’ s degree in psychology . She is survived by her parents , Julie and Shawn ; brothers , Ryan and Kyle ; grandparents , Donald and Lavella Halvorson , and many others .
Virginia Helen Heath , Muir ’ 00 , died May 3 from cancer . Following graduation , she worked in UC San Diego ’ s anthropology department with bonobos before going on to graduate school in Sacramento , Calif .
Robert P . Irons , Jr ., M . S . ’ 69 , died April 1 . He was commissioned as a lieutenant and served for 11 years in the U . S . Navy before earning his master ’ s degree from UC San Diego . He volunteered with the Arizona Humane Society , the City of Glendale and Valley Big Brothers .
Capt . Robert W . Jackson , Muir ’ 75 , died February 17 . He was a Navy fighter pilot , participating in World War II , the Korean War and the Vietnam War . He is survived by his wife , Ethel ; sons , Ronald and Wayne ; daughter-in-law , Nancy ; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren .
Walter Kohn , died April 19 from cancer . He was one of the founding faculty members of the Department of Physics at UC San Diego . In 1998 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry .
Robert M . Lawhead , Muir ’ 72 , died December 7 . He had a long career in programming and computer system administration and worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography .
William F . Loomis died June 30 from cardiac arrest . Loomis joined the UC San Diego faculty in 1966 and became a distinguished professor emeritus in 2010 .
George Mandler died May 6 . He was 91 . Mandler arrived at UC San Diego in 1965 as founder of the psychology department . He also acted as chair and founding director of the Center for Human Information Processing ( CHIP ) before retiring in 1994 .
Dr . Tiffany Moisan , Ph . D . ’ 99 , died June 5 . An oceanographer for the National Atmospheric and Space Administration ( NASA ), she was also involved in educational outreach bringing science to younger students .
Lawrence Gregory Tenn , Muir ’ 83 , died March 3 , after a long career in family medicine .
Linda B . White , M . D . ’ 82 , died February 27 . She was an accomplished writer and teacher at Metropolitan State University of Denver . She is survived by her husband , Barney , and their children , Alex and Darcy .
