At 56 years young , UC San Diego has not yet settled down . And that is a good thing . We are still growing and flourishing . We have big plans . Over the coming year and beyond , you will see our campus evolve , enliven and transform . We are redefining what it means to be a public research university . We are steadfastly increasing student housing , expanding our research capacity with the arrival of our newest fleet addition , R / V Sally Ride , and amplifying our healing impact with the grand opening of the Jacobs Medical Center . Our determination to teach , explore , discover , heal and serve is intensifying .

One of the great things about being a young university is our dynamism . We are flexible , bold , enthusiastic , collaborative and full of energy . We are eager to tackle our world ’ s most pressing challenges and dedicated to developing our next-generation leaders . We shape national and global policies , and drive research initiatives that benefit humankind and our planet — such as the newly established Microbiome and Microbial Sciences Initiative .
UC San Diego Tritons think and do things differently . We are a community of innovators and risk-takers , limited only by our imaginations . And fortunately , we are home to the brightest and most inventive minds who have the courage to create . As we continue to up our game and fulfill our Strategic Plan goals , we are proud that UC San Diego continues to be the experimental and distinctive campus our founders established , one that defies convention , pushes boundaries and challenges expectations .
