Anne Li Baldock , a student at the UC San Diego School of Medicine , was killed by a drunk driver on May 16 in San Diego . She was 24 years old . She had hoped to become a neurosurgeon .

Dennis P . Bryan , Revelle ’ 74 , died on May 17 .

William S . C . Chang died on April 25 . He was 84 . Chang joined the faculty of UC San Diego in 1979 and served as chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1993 to 1996 . He is survived by his wife , Margaret ; son , Hugh ; and his two daughters , Helen and Hedy .

Eugenie Clark , a former researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography , died Feb . 25 from non-smoker ’ s lung cancer in Sarasota , Fla . She was 92 . She was the founding director of Sarasota ’ s Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium .

Madison Cornwell , a student at the UC San Diego School of Medicine , was killed by a drunk driver on May 16 in San Diego . She was 23 years old . She was involved with “ Project Peanut Butter ,” researching how best to feed malnourished people living in the southeastern African nation of Malawi .

Erno Scipiades Daniel , M . S . ’ 70 , Ph . D . ’ 71 , died unexpectedly in Santa Barbara , Calif . on Feb . 21 . He was 68 years old . He was a renowned physician who practiced at the Sansum Clinic ( formerly the Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic ) since 1978 . He is survived by his wife , Martha ; four children ; seven grandchildren ; and extended family .

Jeremy Paul Egnacios , a student at the UC San Diego School of Medicine , died June 22 . He was 26 . In three years at UC San Diego , he worked in 12 different free clinics and organized multiple community events and interventions . He was recently inducted into the Class of 2016 Gold Humanism Honor Society .

Douglas A . Harrell , Marshall ’ 78 , M . A . ’ 83 , Ph . D . ’ 07 , died on May 23 in San Diego . He had over 40 years of experience in educational administration and worked in economically disadvantaged and historically neglected communities . He is survived by his mother , Evelyn ; siblings , Stephen , Alexis , and Cheryl ; and his four children and two grandchildren .

Sherwin Kimble , Marshall ’ 75 , died Feb . 19 in San Diego . He was 61 . He was a human resources director and vice president for several businesses . He is survived by his wife , father , sister , children , and extended family .

Andrew Robert Luke , Warren ’ 07 , died Feb . 21 . He was 29 . He is survived by his wife , Brittnee ; parents , Robert and Colleen ; and siblings , Kathryn and Edward .

James W . McGray , M . A . ’ 74 , Ph . D . ’ 79 , died on May 3 in San Diego . He served at several parishes in San Diego and was a professor at the University of San Diego for 25 years . He is survived by his brothers , Steve and Gary ; and several nephews and nieces .

George D . Parker , M . A . ’ 72 , died Feb . 1 in Timonium , Md ., due to complications from Parkinson ’ s disease . He taught for more than 38 years at Southern Illinois University , where he earned several awards for excellence in teaching .

Joseph L . Reid died of natural causes on April 2 in Del Mar , Calif . He was 92 . Reid was a professor emeritus of physical oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography .

Daniel Steinberg died March 14 . Steinberg was a professor emeritus at the UC San Diego School of Medicine in the departments of endocrinology and metabolism . He was the founding head of the UC San Diego Division of Metabolic Diseases .

Carl “ Wayne ” Vernon died Feb . 22 in San Diego from complications of Parkinson ’ s disease . He joined the UC San Diego Department of Physics in 1966 . He retired as professor emeritus in 1994 .

David M . West , Revelle ’ 72 , died Feb . 12 . He was 64 . He was an OB-GYN in Salem , Ore ., for 32 years before he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis . He is survived by his wife , Mary Grace ; three sons ; and extended family .

John Wooley died in April following a long battle with cancer . He was a longtime associate vice chancellor for research and professor of pharmacology at UC San Diego . He is survived by his wife , Su Chung ; and their son , David .

Tom Yang , Revelle ’ 14 , died on May 1 . He was 22 years old .
