It is a big year for Memphis ’ National Civil Rights Museum , which is marking the 50th anniversary of Rev . Martin Luther King ’ s death . The museum is located at the Lorraine Hotel , where King was shot and killed April 4 , 1968 .
The museum is home to hundreds of artifacts , more than 40 films and numerous oral histories that take visitors through five centuries of history — from the beginning of slavery , through the Civil War and Reconstruction , to the rise of Jim Crow and on to seminal events of the late 20th century that inspired people around the world to stand up for equality .
As they move through the attraction , school groups can learn more about these and other pivotal moments of the U . S . civil rights movement . They can see historical artifacts and hear the personal stories from key figures , such as King , who rose up during the 1950s and ’ 60 to lead the movement for change .
The centerpiece of this year ’ s anniversary commemoration of King ’ s death is a new exhibit , MLK 50 : A Legacy Remembered . It begins with King ’ s birth in Atlanta in 1929 , covers his rise as a spiritual leader and cultural reformer , details the fateful day 50 years ago and encompasses his enduring impact on society as a whole .
