Ext 1795 Midwifery Journal Club June 2013 T he June Meeting of the Midwifery Journal Club was held on Thursday June 27th. The meeting was facilitated by Siobhan Enright who presented the results of a pilot programme entitled Implementation of Routine Antenatal Anti-D Prophylaxis for RhD Negative Pregnant Women in the Rotunda. The planning process for this programme commenced over the previous 8 - 9 months and was piloted by staff in the Outpatients Department. Initial approval was given in October/November 2012 and following this successful pilot, roll-out was expected to take place last June or July. Siobhan’s presentation outlined the indications and guidelines for the administration of this preventative programme, the causes of the Anti-D sensitisation and process. She chartered the introduction of this programme in the United Kingdom and noted the significant decline in HDN Disease in the UK since its introduction. As part of evidenced based practice she referred to published guidelines supporting the use of this programme. The consequences of its implementation in Ireland were discussed and operational issues for staff dealing with postnatal patients. The RAADP Programme saves babies lives and saves long term morbidity. The presentation was well attended by midwifery staff and students from all departments.
