ith the focus on a new year and new staff, it is essential that staff training is
put in place to support clinical and research needs. Following on from the
successful North Dublin Hospital Group Research Day in November 2012,
part of this issue of TRIMESTER focuses on the new and exciting changes to our
Rotunda Research base.
The circle of research puts focus on recent activities including the arrival of our Director
of Research and Academic Affairs, Ms Anne MacLellan. Anne has contributed to our
article on page two on the recent Midwifery Journal Club meeting.
The Midwifery Journal Club hosted a presentation from Anne and others at its meeting
on January 24th which provided an open invitation to midwives to engage in the research
and publishing process. Other contributors included myself, Mr Colin Kirkham, Research
Officer and our visiting speaker, Ms Valerie Smith from Trinity College Dublin.
Continuing with our training and research theme we report on a training event which was
attended by midwifery and nursing staff. This EBSCO training event on February 20th
entitled “Effective Searching using the CINAHL Database” looked at new search strategies and
database facilities on CINAHL. Our thanks to Richard Crooks of EBSCO who travelled
from the UK to deliver this training and to clinical departments who facilitated the release
of staff for the lunchtime sessions. We are fortunate to have this training available to us
and we report on this event on page 4.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to a further training opportunity in March.
On Friday, March 22nd the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Journal Club, at 7:30am, will be host
to two UK presenters from OVID Medline and UpToDate. This shared slot will deliver
training to clinical staff on use of these databases and their features which support
literature searching and research. Please avail of this free training.
Furthermore, we have our usual features latest articles from our journal collection From
the Literature, interesting websites in Sites to Visit, and a look at volunteering in our
Focus On section on the back page.
