This Spring issue is the first using our Rotunda unique branding , logo and colour scheme. We hope you find it attractive but rest assured and for ease of use our layout and topic selection remains the same. In this issue we focus on educational issues and in particular the Irish Health Sciences Library (HSLG) Conference (page 3) and the Academic and Special Libraries Group Seminar (page 2) of the Library Association of Ireland. Both are firm favourites in our calendar of events. Our thanks to the Rotunda and the HSLG for funding staff attendance at these events. The conference this year centred around the recently commissioned and published report Irish Health Libraries: new directions. Report on the status of librarianship and libraries in Ireland, hereafter referred to as the SHeLLI Report. I encourage you to familiarise yourself with the report which can be downloaded from www.hslg.ie/shelli. This report is paramount to the current status and availability of access to health libraries, during a time when resources and staffing are limited. Access to information is essential in our environment and the report outlines the importance of libraries and librarians in facilitating this access to resources and information. Health librarian’s roles are changing and there is a need for librarians to make relevant information available to practitioners when and where it is needed and to health care managers to support the decisions they make. We, your library staff, understand the environment we support and strive to expand our roles so that we can assist you, our users. Further developments include our current research status in relation to the LENUS Research database www.lenus.ie/hse (page 4). We briefly introduced you to the LENUS database in 2009 but now it is a viable, searchable base for research undertaken in our hospitals’ research communities. We continue to support its development at a local level. Our Midwifery Journal Club recent review is on page 5 and our thanks to Dr M Geary for providing a book review also on page 5. We welcome contributions from you, the reader, and value your clinical and administrative opinions regarding library book acquisitions. We hope you enjoy this issue and as always, appreciate your feedback. A M.
