A Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Electronic Universe
E-Journal Navigation
“
Space is big. You just won't
believe how vastly, hugely,
mind-bogglingly big it is. I
mean, you may think it's a
long way down the road to
the chemist's, but that's just
peanuts to space.
“
J
ust like the Galaxy, the Electronic Universe
can be large and daunting. With so many
routes, publishers, titles and articles out
there it can be hard to know where to start.
And when you get there, then what do you do?
Firstly, as a member of staff in the Rotunda
Hospital you are entitled to access all of our
electronic resources which are available to you
from home. Register with the library and we
will provide you with an Athens username and
password which opens up the Electronic Universe
to you.

Athens - not just a spot in Greece
An Athens account acts as a portal that opens
up all of our electronic resources which we have
gathered under one roof for you.
Armed with your Athens account, your first
port of call is the Library News Page. This
webpage (link shown below) is the convenient
launch pad for all of our online resources.
From here you can access Electronic Journals
which are all nestled together in the Journals
A-Z. Simply click on the link and the Journals
A-Z promptly opens in a new web browser.
Then, it is just a matter of selecting the journal
you’d like to view and navigating from issue to
issue.
If you ever have trouble accessing our Electronic Universe,
Don’t Panic! Just let us know and we’ll help you find your way back.
Publishers, Suppliers & Everything
in-between
Why so many? To get the best deal, we shop
around for our resources meaning they don't
all come from the one place. When you select a
link to open a resource it can ultimately open a
webpage to one of our many sources for
example Ovid, EBSCO, Journals Consult, Wiley,
Springer, BMJ or other individual publishers.

A few examples are shown here so that you can
become familiar with the different web pages

you will come across.

Being Mobile
On our travels we have noticed that the Mobile Version of journal sites can block,
limit or even hide the Athens or Institutional Login which gives access to full text
articles. If you find your access is restricted, find the link that will bring you back to
the Full Desktop Site. The Athens or Institutional Login will then be accessible.
