3 Volume 5 Issue 2 June 2012 The Diagnosis and Management of Obstetric Cholestasis Midwifery Journal Club Report T he first meeting of the Midwifery Journal Club for 2012 was held on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012. Ms Emer Croke gave an overview of the proposed new clinical guideline on The Diagnosis and Management of Obstetric Cholestasis, also known as Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP). This guideline discusses a pregnancy specific liver disorder which results in bile flow and elevated bile salt levels that deposit on the skin. Emer discussed this condition in terms of the evidence-based literature to date, its diagnosis, maternal and fetal surveillance and ongoing management during pregnancy. Outpatient monitoring was also discussed, including multi-disciplinary input. The Next Midwifery Journal Club will take place at 11:30am to 12:30pm, Thursday, 21st June 2012 Presentation on Innohep School of Midwifery - All Welcome Your Library is Your Paradise Changes to Inter Library Loan C hange is always inevitable and because we are here to provide you with the best possible library service, we must roll with the sometimes inopportune changes. One such development quickly came our way in December 2011 when Irish healthcare libraries were given notice from the British Library that enforcements were to be made regarding copyright law and the way the British Library provided copies of journal articles to us through Inter Library Loan (ILL). Many of you who use our ILL service will know how invaluable it is for us to gain access to articles which we do not have a subscription to, or can not access freely online. ILL allows us to share our resources with other libraries and to access those much needed resources for your research or study. As the Rotunda Library is part of the Irish Healthcare Libraries Consortium, we appreciate and understand the necessity of these partnerships. We had, as did many other healthcare libraries, a long standing relationship with the British Library regarding ILLs. However, as of January 2012, we can no longer avail of this service. The British Library substantially changed their terms of service from 2012, which had a drastic impact on the ILL service. In short, publishers requested changes to the legal framework of copyright law and the British Library was forced to impose new terms and conditions and introduce new charges and rates which alienated and excluded some of the Irish market from the service. But all is not lost. We understand the necessity of quick and trustworthy access to journal articles and research. As the British Library was a strong and credible source for us to work with, we were aware that an alternative had to be found and hopefully matched if not surpassed in excellence. We signed up to Subito in January this year and so far have found them to be an excellent substitution to the British Library. Subito is a collaboration of research libraries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with a vast range of journals. We can now continue to support your research and studies with ILLs through the Irish Healthcare Library Consortium, Trinity College Library, RCOG and British Medical Libraries and now Subito.
