6 Trimester Rotunda Library Newsletter Focus On - Diabetes D iabetes Ireland is the only national charity in Ireland dedicated to helping people with diabetes. We achieve this by providing support, education and motivation to everyone affected by diabetes. We also raise public awareness of diabetes and its symptoms and fund research into finding a cure for diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a lifelong condition caused by a lack, or insufficiency of insulin. In the absence of a register of people who have diabetes no-one can be entirely sure how many people in Ireland live with diabetes. The total number of people living with diabetes in Ireland is estimated to be 225,840. Knowing the symptoms and risk factors for diabetes is important as non-diagnosis can seriously affect your quality of life. Undiagnosed or poor controlled diabetes can damage your heart, arteries, eyes, nerves and kidneys leading to serious health problems for you and your family to cope with. The Diabetes Research Alliance was set up in 2008 as a subsidiary of Diabetes Ireland, the national charity supporting people with diabetes in Ireland. The Diabetes Research Alliance has the specific aim of promoting, supporting and funding research related to the causes, prevention and cure of diabetes.
