elcome to the Christmas 2016 edition of TRIMESTER. What an
eventful year both historically and politically. A changing world it
seems.
I cannot close this year without reference to our historic events and in particular
our contribution to the 1916 centenary celebrations. Our exhibition, Rotunda Birth
of a Nation ran for the month of March and had over 3,000 visitors through the
Pillar Room doors. People who never before visited the Rotunda before, visited the
historic Pillar Room and Oval Room. They experienced the work of key medical and
nursing women in the Rotunda during 1916. What an honour it was to bring their
stories to life and to experience a wealth of feedback from the general public on the
exhibition.
Our respect for the exhibition was such, that the Master sanctioned the re-hanging
of the exhibition within our hospital walls and it’s virtual access online at
www.rotundabirthofanation.net thereby honouring it’s ongoing contribution to the
history of the hospital. My thanks to the 1916 Commemoration Committee Working
Group who worked with me on this development and to the band of enthusiastic
volunteers who gave their free time and were promoters of exhibition content and
memorabilia.
We are proud to announce that our exhibition,
Rotunda Birth of a Nation, was successfully chosen
as one of the top five websites that best remembers
the events of 1916 and a copy of the website will be
preserved in the National Library of Ireland Web
Archive for future generations.
Open Access has again been highlighted
in our piece on the week of International
Open Access in an attempt to open up
research and scholarship in Ireland on page
Last, but not least, we would like to wish
you all a very Happy Christmas and hope
you all enjoy the festive season and valuable
time with your families.
