The renovations at the school , which serves both Knox County and Barbourville Independent schools , will provide students with state-of-the-art resources , delivering high-quality education and a competitive advantage in the workforce . Officials expect the renovation project to be completed in the next couple of years .
In a similar investment for the future , the state also provided the Knox County Utility Commission $ 1,143,833 to replace an outdated water line , and install a 350-gallon-per-minute booster pump station and a master meter pit . The project will provide the commission with an alternate water source and the ability to support the City of Barbourville during emergencies , such as flooding .
Likewise , the county has started seeing work and investments made into improving broadband internet connectivity for its residences , as well . In the first few weeks of 2022 , Knox County has seen two such grant-funded projects be announced , with over 300 Knox County homes expected to be connected .
“ We ’ ve got to invest in ourselves and believe in ourselves and it ’ ll pay off ,” Mitchell said , noting that operating through the pandemic was ever-changing and challenging . “ But I ’ m optimistic we will overcome this and move on ,” he continued . “ A lot of times you ’ ve got to look at where you ’ ve been and what you ’ re doing to have a vision of where you ’ re going and what you want to do .”
