Congrats Inductees!   On Tuesday, February 18, 96 HPMS students got officially inducted into the NJHS program. The event was full of special guests, speeches and pledges.   The evening started off with Mr. Bohac leading the members and parents with the pledge of allegiance. Ms. Mims, the head adviser of NJHS for HPMS, welcomed everyone to the induction ceremony and the student representatives gave their speeches about the characteristics needed by a NJHS member.   The five characteristics are HPMS students get inducted into NJHS By: Christell Foote scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. Abbey Govett talked about service. Derek Wu spoke about character. Leadership was presented by Rachel Glasstetter. Michael Schmitz talked about citizenship. Katie Krasovec presented on scholarship. Keeping Up With the Olympians Seventh graders complete Greek mythology projects   Mrs. Powers’ class showed their projects on Monday, Jan. 27. “I wanted the students to show and apply their knowledge of Greek mythology,” said seventh grade language arts teacher Mrs. Powers. Mrs. Powers’ class recently did a project on the Greek gods and goddesses and the myths behind them.   The students got into groups and had the option of choosing what they wanted to do: to write their own myth, create an advertisement, make a cartoon strip, conduct a fake interview with one of the gods, or create a TV show. “I was Artemis in one of the interviews,” said Talle Olsen.   “It was a HPISD 3-24-14.indd 2 Pages2-3_CW.indd 2-3 lot of fun and it helped both learn the really us By: Makayla Morgan information, but also show our creative side,” said Charlie Conner. “We were able to not just learn it but use it,” added Maddie Galerston. Connor and Galerston were in the same group. They were one of the few groups that chose to do a written project. “I think they definitely enjoyed it,” said Mrs. Powers. A student in Mrs. Powers’ class while he presents his project   As the students walked onto the stage to receive their certificate, they also got to take a picture with the principal, Dr. Hitzelberger, while Ms. Janik read the names of the honored students. The ceremony closed with the student reciting NJHS pledge. Questions to Ask Mrs. Powers’ class and her Socratic discussion By: Christian Schaeffler   On February 26, Mrs. Powers’ held class in the 7/8 assembly room for a Socratic Discussion. The class was split up in to different groups. The point was to learn by asking more questions and answering the questions about a Walter Dean Myers’ book.
