By Guest Writer Tiffany Word G reat save! Mothers jumped up and yelled for their favorite player, the goalkeeper. She smiled as they cheered for her again after catching the third shot of the game. Taylor Word, 11-year-old keeper for the Texas Lonestars, has been playing soccer for five years and loves it. “I like soccer because it is a fun sport and I get to hang out with my HPISD 3-24-14.indd 15 friend,” Word said. Association football is an 11-player sport that is better known as simply “soccer.” It has over 250 million players worldwide, the most popular sport in the world. The sport is played on a rectangular field with a goal post on each end. Simoneux’s sixth grade class had John and Lynda Massey come by the school campus to talk to the students about Russia. These people have been to this country many times and have great knowledge about it. Questions like what is it like over there and is it cold were asked during this assembly. “The kids were mesmerized,” said Mrs. Simeneux. Aside from liking to hangout with her friend everyday, Word is really good at the 11-player sport. “A lot of people say I’m a good keeper. I think it’s because I don’t get really emotional if someone scores, which rarely happens,” she said. One of the individuals that has inspired Word’s soccer journey is Hope Solo. Word’s dad, Greg Word, has said that he wishes for Taylor to go to college for soccer and one day become a professional player. In addition to her father, Word wants to achieve success as a player. “I really like soccer and I want to play for a really long time.
