Taylor Word, 11-year-old
keeper for the Texas Lonestars,
has been playing soccer for
five years and loves it. “I like
soccer because it is a fun sport
and I get to hang out with my

Association
football is an 11-player
sport that is better known
as simply “soccer.” It
has over 250 million
players worldwide, the
most popular sport in the
world. The sport is played

talk to the
students about Russia. These people have been to this
country many times and have great knowledge about
it. Questions like what is it like over there and is it
cold were asked during this assembly. “The kids were
mesmerized,” said Mrs. Simeneux. There was also a
projector with a full-scale map of the country in two
continents.

Aside from liking
to hangout with her friend
everyday, Word is really
good at the 11-player
sport. “A lot of people
say I’m a good keeper. I
think it’s because I don’t
get really emotional if
someone scores, which
rarely happens,” she said.
One of the individuals
that has inspired Word’s soccer
journey is Hope Solo. Word’s
dad, Greg Word, has said that
he wishes for Taylor to go to
college for soccer and one day
become a professional player.
In addition to her father,
Word wants to achieve success
as a player. “I really like soccer
and I want to play for a really
long time. I would like my
name to become a household
name like Hope Solo.”
