f I had to use one word to describe
my experience at the Sun City Ultra
it would be ‘spectacular’! I’m based
in Cape Town, so racing upcountry and at
altitude was a first for me – and it certainly
didn’t disappoint. I was fortunate enough to
take the win in the men’s ultra-distance race,
but what really stood out for me most was the
spectacular scenery and the holiday vibe at the
race village.
In terms of the actual race, the swim took
us on two loops around the man-made lake
at Sun City’s WaterWorld. The morning was
crisp and cold, with mild water temperatures
that might not have been wetsuit-friendly in
hindsight. Leading out the swim was a first for
me, and the open water allowed me to take
in my surroundings, watch the morning mist
slowly rise off the lake – and try not to think of
any lurking crocs.
The only slightly undulating bike course
means it’s fast and delivers some mean-
looking bike splits. I can say with certainty
that this is the fastest long-course bike leg
in the country! It’s also pretty scenic, taking
you on two laps through the resort to the main
gate and back.
The run is two laps through the resort’s Gary
Player-designed championship golf courses
and features a gradual climb up to the Lost
City and then a downhill section to turnaround.
I was impressed with the immaculate condition
of the greens. The run path is mostly shaded,
and the sharp pitches and descents make it a
real challenge for the legs.
In terms of logistics, the race is an hour
and three quarters’ drive from the north of
Johannesburg. Transition closes at 6:50am,
so it is feasible to drive through on Sunday
morning if you wake up very early. There’s also
plenty of accommodation for those who prefer
a more leisurely race morning and want to
have a weekend at Sun City.
Post-race celebrations were on the shaded
lawns in front of the club house. There was
ample space to cheer on the finishers! The
vibe is more that of a weekend away, with the
race almost a distraction on the side. The
choice between either a sprint or an ultra
distance race also offers the opportunity for
newcomers to get involved. Aside from the
racing, the holiday atmosphere is apparent –
loungers on the hotel pool deck, walks aplenty
through the resort and its gardens, loads of
family activities on offer, and the Big 5 on your
doorstep at the Pilanesberg National Park.
The organisers put up a fantastic day and I’m
looking forward to heading back next year to
experience it all again!
