KEVIN
MACKINNON
Born in Canada, Kevin
had an international
childhood, spending five
years in Joburg before
moving to Tehran and
then Athens. He started
triathlon in 1985 and continued to travel the
world as a pro triathlete. Since retiring, he’s
worked as a journalist, coach and announcer.
He is the founding editor of Triathlon Magazine
Canada and was editor-in-chief for IRONMAN
before leaving to edit TriathlonWorld.com. Tap
into his vast experience on page 90 where
he talks about racing in heat and humidity,
conditions we’ll likely face in Durban.
MAGDA
NIEUWOUDT
After eight years of
amateur racing, Magda
turned pro in June 2017.
A sport scientist and a
triathlon coach, she says
pro status has taught
her so much about herself and the science and
technicalities of the sport. She had a recent
layoff after suffering from heart dysfunction but,
with her typical dedication and smart coaching,
she’s well into an impressive comeback. She
raced in Marbella (see her report on page 106),
then in Barcelona, where she came 6th overall
in a stacked field. Watch this space…
DONOVAN VAN
GELDER
The CyberCo@ch has
raced triathlon and its
constituent sports since
1986, and still gets a
kick out of competing.
He consistently tops
his AG podium at events around SA. “I love to
push myself – it would never be enough for me
to just exercise to stay in shape.” Always keen
to get the edge, he enjoys rocking a disc wheel
and deep sections on his TT bike. The Don
shares the aero advantages with us on page
50, plus gives us the lowdown on the Durban
course in his sunny home city on page 140.
ABRÉ ROUX
When Electric Ink
Media’s Commercial
Manager isn’t working
on brand-building
campaigns in the sports
industry, he’ll be found
putting in the miles on
the swim, bike and run. Having been close to
going pro as a junior swimmer, he now loves the
variety of challenges that multisport events offer,
as well as the natural world he gets to explore.
This year he completed his first IRONMAN in
PE, clocked up a PB of 04:43 in Sri Lanka and
will be heading to Nice in September. He shares
his experience of racing abroad on page 76.

SEAN PINCUS
A sports podiatrist for 30
years, Sean is fascinated
by feet, shoes and how
they affect the body –
and how the body effects
feet – and he still believes
modern engineers
have never made anything quite as amazing
as the human foot. But like all structures, the
feet need care. As a keen sportsman who has
played cricket, hockey and martial arts, and now
competes in cycling and tri, he’s also aware that
injury affects more than just the body. With his
foot expertise and some injury frustrations of his
own, Sean was the ideal choice to explore new
shoe technologies for us on page 96.
ANDRE BEKKER
SA’s perennial AG champ
first got into tri in the
80s, after a sporty start
at school. He went on
to become a pro cyclist,
racing in SA and Europe.
Years later he took up
tri again, where he’s notched up an impressive
17 wins in his age group. As well as managing a
property portfolio, he’s owner of 5th Dimension
Coaching. He also co-authored the Mental Edge
workbook with sport psychologist Dr Patrick
Cohn. Given his philosophy of combining
education and practical knowledge, we asked
him to share his tri lessons on page 64.

LARISSA
KRAJASICH
Originally from Austria,
endorphin addict and
restaurant owner Larissa
moved to SA with her
two boys in 2013. Once
settled among sporty
Saffas, she started running with Run/Walk
for Life. A keen swimmer as a child, she then
decided to try multisports. She bought a bike,
did a training programme and signed up for
Slanghoek. That got her hooked and now one
race chases another. She loves to combine
racing with travel, and shares her experience of
the new IRONMAN 70.3 Greece on page 60.

CAMERON WURF
Keen to prove he’s more
than just a bike monster,
the straight-talking
Aussie has been working
hard on his run. It saw
him win in Cannes, then
at IRONMAN Australia.
He has the Last Word on page 146, where he
tells us he’s planning to outrun his rivals in
Kona this year. The former Olympic rower and
pro cyclist always has some classic chirps,
many aimed at fellow uber biking sledger Andy
Starykowicz. He’s more than ready for another
Kona showdown with ‘TheRealStarky’, and says
he’s found his vocation in IRONMAN racing.
