PEOPLE » KATHERINE KELLY LANG STAR FOR TRI KATHERINE KELLY LANG Hollywood star loves endurance racing, both on her horses and in tri over the IRONMAN 70.3 distance. A Women For Tri ambassador, she tells us how the swim, bike and run kee s her fi t and strong for a ing Brooke and managing fashion abe s across the or d. South Africans know you as the glamorous Brooke Logan in long- running soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. What they may not know is that you’re an experienced equestrian and a keen sportswoman. Tell us more about your sporting background, and how you got drawn into triathlon. I grew up in Southern California doing a lot of diff erent sports. Gymnastics, diving, swimming, baseball, soft ball, dance, skiing, horseback riding and hiking. My father was in the Olympics for the ski jump and my mom was in Junior Olympics for swimming. My number one passion in sport is equestrian disciplines – mostly endurance racing on my horses doing 25, 50, 75 and 100-mile races, which I’ve been doing for 25 years. Triathlon training takes up a lot of time, so I had to put my horseback riding on hold for a while. I am looking forward to getting back into it though. I started triathlon about fi ve years ago aft er signing up for a sprint race with The Bold and the Beautiful in the Malibu Triathlon. I came third in the celebrity division and got excited about doing more. I quickly trained harder to do an IRONMAN 70.3 race and have been doing mostly that distance for fi ve years now. I competed in the IRONMAN in Kona in 2015, but I prefer the half distance. You’ve worked with some top triathlon coaches, including Dave Scott in 2015, and Siri Lindley in the run-up to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. What was your key takeaway from each of these coaching greats? Dave and Siri have diff erent coaching styles, but the end result was fabulous with both of them. I love them both. They are incredible people and amazing coaches! I was very lucky and grateful to train under their guidance. They both made sure I had the correct training and conditioning to have a satisfying result in all my races with my crazy busy schedule. They also taught me not to get stressed out if I missed training sessions, and how to train when I travel. How do you fi t in training around your mad schedule? You not only have long days on set, but you also manage a fashion business, produce the great RYD sports clothing range, and act as a spokeswoman for Breakaway for Cancer. I love to swim, bike and run. I also love to stay in shape and be healthy. It is important for me to be fi t and strong in order to keep up my life schedule, with my acting on The Bold and the Beautiful, movies in Italy and America, our fashion business, and travelling around the world. What motivates you to keep training and competing? Purely health reasons or do you actually enjoy swimming, cycling and running regularly? Actually right now, I am just running... We have been travelling so much this year and taking on new ventures. It has been hard to keep it all up. So far this year, I’ve fi lmed the TV show I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in South Africa in February. And then we were in Australia in April for Katherine Kelly Lang Kaft ans and in Italy in May for a campaign with my line Salsedine by KKL. And in between all of that shooting B&B in Hollywood. Next week we go back to Australia, and then Italy. It never stops! LOL! What does a typical week in the life of Katherine Kelly Lang look like? We manage many of our fashion businesses around the world. It keeps us quite busy. I guess you can say we have to have careful planning and scheduling for all that we do. I say ‘we’ because my partner, Dominique Zoida, and I do this all together. He is great with the scheduling. I think if it was left up to me I would procrastinate some, but that is why we make such a good team. Teamwork and working together for the best outcome is what we are all about! We love to train and race together as well. You’ve participated in a number of IRONMAN 70.3 races. What distinguished the event in Nelson Mandela Bay for you? I have enjoyed all the 70.3 races I have done in many diff erent countries. I loved our trip to South Africa for the World Championship. It was an incredible race with beautiful views and in a special city.
