Contributors EDITORIAL DIRECTOR & PUBLISHER Paul Ingpen [email protected] 021 438 5972 / 082 990 8408 HENRI SCHOEMAN Henri, 29, has achieved a great deal in his 10 years of triathlon. He was a national swimmer before turning to tri and won a Commonwealth silver medal in 2014. His running steadily improved under his dad’s coaching and at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio he won bronze, the first Olympic medal South Africa has won in triathlon. At the 2016 ITU Grand Final in Mexico he claimed gold ahead of the Brownlee brothers. Henri raced his first ultra-distance triathlon which he describes on page 104. PAULA ARMSTRONG Paula is an economist by day and an overthinker by night. She is passionate about getting to the bottom of her psyche and understanding what makes us tick. Paula is all about ventilating shame and tackling monsters head-on. Fascinated by fallibility, she lives by the mantra “Pay attention to the cracks, because that’s where the light gets in”. Her spare time is spent reading, running and swimming. She also writes, which quiets the demons. Read more on page 84. DERRON THOMSON When he’s not training for triathlon, Derron tries to spend as much time as possible with friends and family. His ideal breakaway is either a few days on the river doing as little as possible, or a hunting trip. He loves being out in the veld, away from the city, soaking up nature at its finest. Guilty pleasures include binge-watching series or meeting up with friends and enjoying a couple of ‘refreshments’, for carboloading purposes obviously. Read this rising star’s story on page 108. REBECCA GATANG’I Besides loving swim/ bike/run, Becky says she’s just a normal girl next door, full of life and aspirations. She loves to challenge herself by trying new things and exploring the world through travel. She mentors university students by way of the Allan Gray Foundation programme and is an ambassador for Women for Tri. Her happy place is the gym, which she visits on a daily basis when she’s not preparing for a hectic triathlon schedule. Read about how Becky is opening doors for women to give tri a go with her Ketsh Up initiative on page 112. RICHARD LAWRIE Richard Lawrie grew up in Nelson Mandela Bay. He is the founder of Matrix Multisport and has discovered his passion in coaching. He has raced numerous IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events, including the IRONMAN African Championship and World Championship in 2017. Richard is our inside man on the IRONMAN course and offers some tips on what you can expect on race day (page 124). Aside from training and work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and precious six-month-old baby, Caleb. KRISTIAN FESEL Kristian has completed all 15 IRONMAN African Championship races in PE and the next event will be his 19th full IRONMAN race. Kristian grew up playing soccer and is an avid Manchester City fan. When not training, he enjoys golf, braais and drinking beer with mates. It is nevertheless his dream to complete an IRONMAN with his kids, Madison and Aiden, one day. In 2014 he started a triathlon club called Smart Tri, which is still going strong. He tells us more about racing IRONMAN Wales on page 42. He’s been married to Val, his best ‘second’, for 42 years, and they have a son and a daughter, and two grandchildren. Ian retired 10 years ago and settled in Fish Hoek in Cape Town. His days are spent trying hard to master the art of surfskiing (he hopes do the downwind Miller’s Run to soon) and playing squash, where he admits he struggles to beat his 75-year-old mates who are truly inspirational. 14 SANDY COFFEY Photography is in Sandy’s DNA, offering her the dynamic exchange between subjects, sports events, spaces and experiences. Her work has taken her to many places in SA and further afield, but it’s in her home town of PE where she loves to photograph the IRONMAN events. “It’s the human spirit that I see. From the tenacity and physicality of the winners, to the last athletes making their way in the dying moments of the race, I am moved. And when I am moved, I take better photographs,” she says.
