With the theme,“ Here for You Then; Here for You Now,” Saint Joseph London is celebrating a century of caring for people in Laurel and surrounding counties this year.
“ The legacy of caring for our community that started as Pennington Hospital in 1926 continues today,” said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph London.“ We are celebrating our past this
year, but we are also looking forward to new innovations and services as we continue to care for our community and position our hospital to serve current and future generations.”
During this yearlong celebration, the hospital will mark the occasion with a few special events, including dedication of a statue to Saint Joseph, a lunch for retirees, a Centennial Golf Tournament in July and a Centennial Gala in August.
The history of Saint Joseph London has been a storied
one, with advancements and achievements in medicine through the humankindness associated with the mission of the hospital, a part of Saint Joseph Health and CommonSpirit.
It all began with Dr. Henry Vincent( H. V.) Pennington, who established the Pennington Infirmary in 1904. It was renamed Pennington Hospital in 1926 when a new facility opened on Main Street in London. That hospital became Marymount Hospital in 1946 when the Sisters of Charity
of Nazareth purchased the facility that was located on a hill on Ninth Street, then expanded the facility over the years to offer new services. That included the first cardiac catheterization lab in southeastern Kentucky in 1988.
Saint Joseph London became the new name of the hospital in 2008, following the purchase of the facility by Catholic Health Initiatives. That investment brought new additions, including outpatient surgery and open heart surgical units.
