Known as the " Niagara of the South," the 125-foot wide curtain of water is dramatic day or night. But it ' s only at night during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere.

The Cumberland River begins in southeastern Kentucky and flows west through the small communities of Pineville, Barbourville, and Williamsburg before entering into Daniel Boone National Forest and flowing over the Cumberland Falls.
The Upper Cumberland River above the falls is fairly remote, with the upper most section consisting of primarily riffle / run habitat and gradually turning into riffle / run / pool habitat
The Pinball Museum is one of Corbin’ s more popular attractions.

There are mild rapids throughout this portion of the Upper Cumberland River so research into the section of the river you are floating should be done before making any trip. Cobble, boulders, and bedrock are the main substrates found in the river as it flows from its source at the confluence of Poor Fork and Clover Fork downstream and into Lake Cumberland. Anglers fishing the Upper Cumberland can look forward to quality channel catfish, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and walleye.

The district contains two state designated Kentucky Wild Rivers, the Cumberland and Rockcastle, and a portion of Lake Cumberland. Two wildlife management areas, Cane Creek and Mill Creek, are popular for hunting. The Whitman Branch Shooting Range provides an excellent location for practicing target skills. Cumberland River
DR. THOMAS WALKER STATE HISTORIC SITE- FIRST KENTUCKY HOME

He joined the Loyal Land Company, organized and led the first expedition through the gap in the mountains, which he named Cumberland Gap in 1750. His expedition explored thousands of acres of land in the western wilderness of Kentucky decades before Lewis & Clark. Near the river, which he named the Cumberland, Walker built a cabin. A replica now stands on part of the land claimed by Dr. Walker. He returned to his Virginia home shortly thereafter, but left a journal documenting the hardships and discoveries of his travels.
